3 Signs That Your Marketing Is… “Meh!”

by | Apr 18, 2018

It’s the 21st century, folks! Even the smallest and humblest of businesses are slowly but surely realizing that the world around them is changing. Living in the digital age affords us opportunities that our entrepreneurial forebears could only have dreamed of. Today, virtually anyone can take an enterprising idea and convert it into a side hustle alongside their full time job which could well flourish into a thriving new business. But while the modern age provides us with more opportunities than ever to fulfill our entrepreneurial dreams, it also creates an unprecedented level of competition. In order to survive in an era where customers are more capricious than ever, all businesses must realize that content is king, marketing is mayor and branding is boss!

But while an online presence is essential for any business today, it’s better to have no online presence. If your Branding is boring, your content is commonplace and your marketing is “meh!”, you could actually do your brand more harm than good. Here are some easy to spot signs that your brand isn’t just not helping your bottom line, it’s actually working against you…

You’re trying to do it all yourself

Any entrepreneur worth their salt will tell you that there’s a time for doing things in-house and a time for outsourcing. While your content marketing may present a wonderful opportunity for you to make your voice heard, it’s impractical to take on your entire marketing operation on your own, especially when you have so many strategic and operational aspects of your business that demand your attention.

Moreover, if you’re producing your own video content, you could inadvertently damage your brand if you don’t outsource to a digital video production company. Users have come to expect an extremely slick and professional look in their video content, and it may undermine the quality of your brand if you don’t provide this.

You’re cutting costs on content creation

It’s only natural that businesses should want to keep their overheads down, but when outsourcing white label content for your marketing, you really do get what you pay for. All too many entreprepreneurs outsource blog posts and other written content to low cost overseas content farms. This tends to be poorly written, riddled with spelling and grammatical errors and lacking in any real substance.

If you’re choosing a content provider based solely on cost, chances are you’re not getting the kind of content that will facilitate genuine engagement. Look for a content marketing company that uses a pool of talented writers.

Your reach looks healthy, but your engagement is poor

Usually, a good look at your metrics is all you need to determine the efficacy of your marketing strategy, but knowing how to use those metrics is another matter entirely. Some entrepreneurs look solely at their reach (the amount of clicks they’re getting). While this tends to be a reassuringly high number, it’s really just a vanity metric and doesn’t necessarily determine quality of engagement. If your reach metrics are high but your engagement metrics (like scroll depth, click through rate, likes comments or shares) are low, there are clearly barriers to engagement in your content.
