A Home Office For Your Business? It’s Yours in a Weekend

by | Jun 15, 2018

You’ve got the business idea, the funding, and the drive to bring it to life, but you lack one thing: a place to work, a room in which you can build your empire. When you’re just starting out, there’s little point in renting office space – actually, it’s highly recommended that you avoid paying for office space until it’s essential – and so the best place to look is in your own home. This can be done in a single weekend! Below, we run through everything you’ll need to do to create a productive, work-friendly space.

Finding the Ideal Space

Most people won’t have much choice when it comes to which room they’ll set aside from their office. The only room that’s free will have to do! If you have more than one option, however, it’s worth thinking about which room is going to be the most conducive to getting work done. If you live with other people, it’s a good idea to pick a room that’s far away from the thrum of busier rooms. To create an ideal working environment, pick a room that is spacious, has no other purpose (such as storing items), and lets in natural light.

The Basic Infrastructure

Once you’ve cleared out all the belongings that won’t contribute to your business success, you’ll have to put in a few essential items. And really, when we’re talking about a home office, that really only means three things: a desk, chair, and computer! Note, though, that it’s a good idea to think about each of the items, especially the chair. You’ll want to make it possible to work for many hours on end, and if you’re not comfortable where you’re sitting, then this won’t be possible.

The Tools for Productivity

You’ll need your computer to be fast, capable, and have an internet connection. Beyond that, it’s about installing the software that’ll help you to produce your best work, such as Office 365 for business. Productivity can be a big issue for at-home workers, but if you have the right tools in your arsenal, you should avoid too many wasted hours. It is a good idea, however, to install software that tracks where you’re spending your time; it might just be the nudge in the right direction you need the next time you think about scrolling through Facebook.

Adding the Personal Touch

The office of the past was all about business, but that’s not the case anymore. Today, offices should have the personal touch! So liven up your office with photos, plants, souvenirs, and the like. It’ll make the space more enjoyable, and will help bridge the gap between your working hours and downtime (though be sure to keep them separate!).

Getting Down to Business

Now that you’ve got everything you need to work well, you’ll have no excuse to put off starting your business. Sit down, get comfortable, and put in a few solid hours. It’ll feel like a working space in no time at all, especially when success starts coming your way.
