Casting Creativity Aside: The Boring Business Of Blogging
Not long ago, blogging was the reserve of hobbyists and creatives. Now though, many are making their living this way. It’s a wonderful creative freedom of the modern world. But, this development isn’t without flaws. After all, bloggers aren’t business people. For the most part, we’re creative individuals who want to get our voices heard. If we can get paid for doing that, then all the better. But, it can lead to issues when your blog starts to real success.
You may even find yourself in a position where you have to cast creativity aside and get all business on your blog. It sounds boring, and you aren’t the only one who struggles with this. But, failure to take action could result in trouble with the tax man. Not to mention you’ll struggle to grow if you don’t accommodate your blog’s business potential. So, buckle up and read on to find out how to take your blog on the business ride.
The reality check of registering
The first thing you need to consider is that all booming businesses need to be registered. This ensures you adhere to standards and pay the right tax. You may have earnt a small amount from your blog already and included it on your tax return. In that case, you’re already the sole proprietor of your site. But, as money starts to roll, filing this way can get complicated. Not to mention that a sole proprietor operation can only involve you. If you want to hire and expand, you’ll need to register as either a corporation or a limited liability company (LLC). For your purposes, an LLC may be best. This would keep business and personal costs separate and could save you money due to more flexible tax structures. Bear in mind that there is a cost involved with taking this step, and you can find out more about that on sites like EasyLLCFile. For the most part, though, the savings this affords you will make it more than worth your while.
Advantages of accountants
Once you’ve registered, seek an accountant. It may have been easy enough to file your returns when you weren’t earning much, but that won’t last. The more you make, the harder it’ll be. Before you know it, you’ll spend more time on maths than you do on writing. Not ideal. So, taking time out to do the tedious job of finding someone could save you hours with nothing but numbers.
Bring organization to the table
It’s also crucial to consider organization now you’re successful. The odd post now and again may have been sufficient before, but your audience and bank balance now rely on regular uploads. It may be that you write multiple posts and schedule them to keep content regular. Or, you may want to make a note of posting days and dedicate a few hours on each to write fresh content. Either way, you need to tighten this ship to ensure it doesn’t sink under its newfound success.
