Introverts In Business, It’s Time To Speak Up

Contributory

by | Jun 15, 2018

Introverts have a bad reputation in the workplace. They often feel isolated in the office – and who can blame them; it’s difficult to make new relationships – and end up working silently and not sharing their ideas. In reality, being introverted only means that you are not comfortable attracting the attention to you in a social situation. However, there are some popular tips to tackle the popular fears that cripple introverts into professional silence. Indeed, remember that you’re a qualified and trained professional. Make your voice heard; it’s time people listen.

Too shy to speak? Not anymore

The most common reason for introverts to remain mostly silent during business conversations is because they feel nervous speaking in a social situation. But, unfortunately, being shy can affect your career in the long term, that’s precisely why it’s crucial that you develop effective speaking skills. With training, you can develop patterns of expressions and sayings to bring your point across confidently. You can indeed induce confidence in your choice of words and your body behavior, such as standing with an open chest while you speak. With practice, you can even trick your mind into thinking that you’re shyness has disappeared, and gradually it will too. In short, fake it until you can make it.

I never know what to say

If you find yourself suffering from a blank mind –similar to a blank page for a writer – when you’re asked to speak, you might be able to learn a few tips from effective web copy. Indeed,  online people have an attention span of less than 8 seconds, meaning that a webpage needs to be engaging to keep people interested. In real life, thankfully, your interlocutors will be giving more attention to your words, but you can still use web tips to boost your confidence. The content starts with a benefit-driven headline that summarizes the mission of the page. You can find inspiration to create your own benefit-driven introduction sentence about yourself, which you can use in network events for instance.

Nobody listens to me anyway

Introverts tend to hold their body protectively, arms crossed over their chest and not meeting the eyes of their interlocutor. It can be helpful to learn about what your body language says about you, so that you can learn to get noticed in a room just by the way you choose to stand. Indeed, you can use your body to grow your career successfully by improving open gestures and building a sense of warmth. Make eye contact, get used to smile, nod and lean towards your interlocutor, and mirror people you want to create a relationship with.

I’m worried nobody will like my ideas

When you work in a creator industry, sharing your work can feel extremely difficult. For introverted individuals, sharing a creative idea brings uncomfortable exposure. But the secret to sharing your ideas without fear is to anticipate and prepare so that nothing can make you lose your balance. Make sure your vision is as clear and strong as possible. You can choose trusted friends to rehearse with and get feedback before the big day.

Ultimately, you’ve been hiding for too long. It’s time to let your skills and ideas shine. With a little practice, you can erase your shyness, doubts, and worries about your worth through effective communication, preparation, body language and constructive feedback.
